Rolls-Royce, the England-based luxury car manufacturer, has presented its first ever concept car an at event held in London a couple of days ago. It is aptly named the Vision Next 100 as it represents the vision of the upcoming 100 years for the luxury automobile market across the world.
It is codenamed 103EX and is designed to offer the signature grand and luxurious experience for its occupants. It is one of the four vehicles announced by the BMW Group earlier this month.
By proposing a fully autonomous vehicle, the thinkers at Rolls-Royce agree to a future filled with automation and self-driven cars. The Vision Next 100 doesn't have a steering wheel or dashboard to take control if the driver wants to!
The seating consists of an ivory-coloured sofa covered with a combination of silk and wool. The carpet is specially woven from wool. The front wall is decorated by an OLED screen, which is controlled by Eleanor (more on this later). It can be used to see ride related information, or enjoy a movie. An analogue watch is located above the screen. The cabin itself is encircled by a wood panel that runs from the door to behind the screen and up beside the side of the sofa.
On the exterior, the usual Spirit of Ecstasy, the Pantheon grille (reimagined), and the long bonnet are found. The double-R badge is red in colour, thereby echoing that the vehicle is an experimental Rolls-Royce. It comes with a two-tone design. The upper section is made of tainted glass. The lower metal part is decorated in a light color scheme, thus creating the perfect contrast. The 28-inch wheels are hand-built from 65 different pieces of aluminium.
They have built their own Siri, called the Eleanor. As you might have guessed it, it is a tribute to Eleanor Thornton - an actress who is the inspiration behind the Spirit of Ecstasy figure found on the hood of all the Rolls-Royce vehicles. Eleanor will act as the in-car virtual assistant for the Vision Next 100. Upon request, it will bring the car to the door for pickup, decide a route and drive to the destination.
The passengers need not bend to enter or exit the vehicle. The hinged roof is designed to rise automatically from the left to achieve the same. Once the car reaches the destination, the Spirit of Ecstasy idol and the grille are illuminated. Then the illumination spreads from the trailing edge of the front wheel to the rear of the door. The roof and the door opens, a red light illuminates the way, while a footstep emerges from the side of the car.
Since almost everything about the vehicle is automated, the luggage compartment is no dud. It automatically opens once the car reaches its destination.
The V12 combustion engine is not used to power the Vision Next 100. Two 250 kW electric motors are used instead. One of them is mounted in between the front wheels, while the other in between the rear ones.
Not sure if we will see the day the Vision Next 100 comes into existence. However, the future looks promising.
