It's been close to 5 years since Mahindra's acquisition (70% share) of Korean auto major SsangYong Motor. Under Mahindra's leadership, the SsangYong Tivoli became the first model to be rolled out from their expansive factories from the year 2014 onwards. Initially christened as SsangYong X100, this compact SUV/Crossover made all the right noises during its unveiling at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
Named after an Italian town- Tivoli, Lazio, which can be read as 'I Lov It' in reverse, this mini SUV has done brisk sales in South Korea and UK. It has also won accolades in Belgium where it was elected as the 2016 Family Car of the year by VAB ( Largest Automotive association in Belgium ).
Now, being 5000 kms away, why am I writing this article! Simple and Plain - Mahindra is set to launch Tivoli in India in the 3rd quarter this year and is debuting this model in the Auto Expo 2016 to be held in New Delhi in February.
The Tivoli is grand looking mini SUV with stylish LED DRLs' coupled with projector headlamps in the front. The grill line is rather slim, but creates quite an impression along with Fog lamps and Honey combed bumper. The bonnet has characteristic lines enhancing its appearance. The rear too looks well rounded and has LED tail lamps and stop lamps. Adding to its beauty is the Rear spoiler cum LED stop light. The Tivoli is set to get 18 inch Diamond cut alloy wheels giving the SUV a sporty look.
The Tivoli is likely to be offered in a range of interior color options like Pure Black, Dual tone Beige-Black and Dual tone Red-Black. The cabin appears more like a cockpit with a lot of electronics like Supervision instrumentation cluster, steering mounted controls and a 7 inch infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, It has a large dashboard made of Soft material IP giving a luxurious feel to the buyers. This mini SUV also offers a lot of intelligent storage spaces.
The Tivoli is also set to offer top notch safety features like ABS with ESP and 7 airbags. Front and Rear Park assist is sure to allow safe parking of this mini beast. It also boasts of offering superior braking performance.
Coming to the power dynamics, the Tivoli is currently powered by a 1.6 litre Petrol engine delivering a max Power of 128 PS @ 600 RPM and max Torque of 160 NM @ 4600 RPM. The gear box is a slick 6 speed Manual Transmission. An automatic version maybe offered in due course of time.
Whats interesting is to see if Mahindra offers a Diesel motor for this mini SUV in India or look to launch just the Petrol version.
The Tivoli is also packed with features like 'Idle Stop and Go System' or IGS that greatly improves the fuel efficiency in bustling city traffic. Whether Mahindra would offer the same in India, needs to be seen.
Since Tivoli would be pitted against Ecosport, Duster and Creta, expect the pricing to be between 8-12 lacs INR.
