Riding Pillion on Bengaluru roads? Make sure you wear a helmet, as the Helmet rule is being enforced for pillion riders from Day 1 of the New Year.

The Notification issued by Transport Department clearly indicates that every person while driving or riding pillion on a motorcycle, scooter or moped of any Brake Horse Power (BHP) is required to wear protective headgear when riding the vehicle within the limits of Karnataka state.

Reports indicate that close to 1.31 Crore two wheelers registered in the state are likely to get affected by this rule.

This move has got mixed reaction from the motorists. Some have welcomed this move keeping in mind the improved safety of the pillion riders. But most motorists feel that there needs to be a grace period before which the rule can be strictly enforced so as to permit the purchase of helmets.

Riders are likely to be slapped a fine of INR 100 for non-compliance.
