Porsche has launched a light-weight stripped-down version of
the famous 911 R at the Geneva Motor Show 2016. Aptly named the 2016 Porsche
911 R, the vehicle is announced to mark the anniversary of its predecessor
which came into existence way back in 1967. The new 911 R is expected to
deliver a high level of performance, given its light-weight design.
The 911 R was designed with corners in mind. The standard rear-axle steering offers direct turn-in response and precise handling, maintaining a high level of stability at the same time. The mechanical rear differential lock ensures maximum traction.
The 911 R is powered by a 4-liter flat-6 engine, along with
a 6-speed manual transmission gearbox. After 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS, this is
the third Porsche car to feature that engine. It delivers 370 kW (500 hp) at
8,250 rpm and generates 458 Nm (338 lb-ft) of torque at 6,250 rpm. It can accelerate
from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. It boasts of a top track speed of 200 mph.
Porsche Stability Management (PSM) has been specifically
calibrated for the 911 R. The standard rev-match feature can be activated at
the touch of a button. A single-mass flywheel and front-axle lift system are optional.
The car comes with the standard Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake
(PCCB) system which offers 16.1-inch front and 15.4-inch rear rotors. The front
tires measure 245 mm, while the rear ones are 305 mm, and offer significant
grip level. They are mounted on 20-inch wheels with a matte aluminum finish and
center locking hubs. The steering wheel measures 14.1-inches in diameter.
The 911 R retains a sleek, classic look. The fixed rear wing
has been removed. Instead, an automatically deployed rear spoiler and a rear
underbody diffuser have been added. A redesigned spoiler lip is installed at
the front. Optional Porsche logos on the side of the vehicle, and color stripes
in red or green running over the center of the car are available. The conventional
handles are replaced with door opening loops.
The 2016 911 R weighs just 3,021 lb (1,370 kg). The front luggage compartment lid and the front fenders are made of carbon fiber. The roof is made of magnesium. The Sport Exhaust System is made of lightweight titanium. The 911 R comes standard without an air conditioning or audio system, but can be ordered at no extra charge.
The 911 R is equipped with full bucket seats with carbon fiber backrests and seat centers upholstered in houndstooth design. It is a limited edition vehicle, and only 991 of them will be manufactured! Carbon fiber interior trim strips with an embedded aluminum badge on the passenger side indicate the limited production number.
