Ever wondered about the reflexes of Formula 1 drivers? The sport may not appear difficult to a bystander, but ask the person behind the wheel and one might learn the truth.
To record the eye movement of a typical racer, Sahara Force India's Nico Hulkenberg put on an eye-tracking goggles tech from Tobii and drove a few laps. The results were far from believable.
When leaving the pit lane and joining the track, he takes a mere 0.1 seconds to check the rear-view mirror. On the start line, he takes a little less than 0.1 seconds to react when the light changes from red to green. If this were athletics, anything less than 1/10th of a second would have been considered a false start. It is safe to say the visual reaction of racers is beyond the reach of most humans.
