Goodyear Eagle 360 concept tyre is a sphere!

Yes, you read it right. Goodyear, the 117-year-old tyre manufacturer, had launched the Eagle 360 concept tyre at the Geneva Motor Show last year. Donning a futuristic and innovative design, the Eagle 360 is shaped as a sphere. It looks like something that has come straight out of a Sci-Fi. It is intended for the self-driving cars of tomorrow and is unbelievably sophisticated, nature-inspired, and works on the concept of magnetic levitation.

Currently, one needs to turn the steering for the car to move in the right direction, and sometimes we even prefer taking a subway just to avoid the nightmare of parallel parking. However, the future spherical tyres by Goodyear are ready to roll in all directions, taking all the parking and skidding woes away.

The tyre operates on the principle of magnetic levitation, which implies that the object (tyres in this case) will be suspended to the vehicle via a magnetic pull, thus ensuring smoother drives and less noise.

The autonomous tyre is also equipped with sensors that can register road conditions and weather of the region. This data can then be communicated to the car, thus guaranteeing more control and ensuring enhanced safety. Goodyear Eagle 360 tyre is 3D printed, which means that it can be customised based on the region it is running in.

The Eagle 360 design also has biomimicry, one of the principle technologies by Goodyear, that mimics nature. The texture of the tyre absorbs water from the road and later ejects it out using a centrifugal force. This ensures that there is no risk of aquaplaning. The tread also mimics a brain coral, and the groove bottom has elements that are similar to a natural sponge, resulting in better grip and an excellent driving performance.

With Eagle 360 tyres, the future of autonomous vehicle is taking the right shape by steadily reducing the interaction and intervention of humans. While Goodyear’s concept tyres are pushing the boundaries and setting new benchmarks for the automobile world, we just hope that the future roads of India are ready for it.
