At the ongoing Geneva Motor Show, Hyundai has unveiled its futuristic FE Fuel Cell Concept car as its next generation hydrogen-powered vehicle. The concept car is the next step in the company's ambition of creating a zero-emission Hydrogen Energy Society.
This is not the first time Hyundai is entering into the fuel cell segment. In 2013, the ix35 Fuel Cell (aka Tucson Fuel Cell) vehicle was launched. It became the world's first mass-produced hydrogen-powered vehicle. It is currently on sale in 17 countries across the world.
The Hyundai FE Fuel Cell Concept is part of their eco-vehicle program, under which 14 or more new environmentally-focused models will be introduced by 2020. This includes the IONIQ line introduced at the Geneva Motor Show last year.
The new concept car features a clean and calm design, along with a flowing form and minimalistic style all across. The rear airfoil is stylish and comes with integrated vents. The internal air humidifier uses the water emitted by the hydrogen fuel cell to humidify the cabin's air making it comfortable for the passengers. Portable battery packs charged by the car can be used to power devices on the go. The trunk is spacious enough to store and charge an electric scooter!
The FE in the name stands for Future Eco, hinting at the eco-friendliness of the fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle by Hyundai. This latest technology is 20% lighter and 10% more efficient as compared to the one deployed in Tucson ix35. The power density of the fuel cell is also increased by 30%, significantly boosting the range of the car.
The Hyundai FE Fuel Cell Concept is capable of running for more than 800 kilometres on a single fill-up. An SUV Fuel Cell model is set to launch next year, and the FE Fuel Cell Concept's developments can play a significant role in it.
